Daydrinker's Dessert Drinks: The Governor at Bravo | Eat Jackson!

Hey, it?s?Daydrinker! Though I have expanded my horizons when it comes to adult beverages, I still enjoy a girlie drink ?er, I mean ?dessert cocktail? ? every now and then. Lucky for me, and all the rest of you secret (or not so secret) girlie-drinkers looking to sip yourself into a diabetic coma, Jackson has plenty to offer in the sugary spirits department.

Here?s one you may want to try on your next night (or day) on the town? especially if you love coffee.

The Governor at BRAVO!

BRAVO-GovernorDrinkThe Setting: BRAVO! Italian Restaurant & Bar

The Specs: Captain Morgan, small shot of espresso, a pinch of salt, caramel syrup, simple syrup

The Skinny: If you ignore the fact that it?s chilled and served in a martini glass, this tastes like the richest, most decadent?cup of coffee you?ve ever had. The espresso and the sweetness from the syrups were the dominant flavors for me. I could tell?there was alcohol in it, but I wouldn?t have been able to pinpoint what kind had I not already known the drink contained rum.

If you enjoy sweet coffee drinks, and a sweet take on coffee-flavor, you?re probably going to love The Governor. This is easily one of my new favorite dessert?cocktails.

In other words, this Governor gets the Daydrinker vote.

Wrist pain after using weights. Wtf?

Hi, this is my first post; I'm looking for some advice.

I've started doing a little training over the last 3 or 4 weeks.

I bought a pair of adjustable dumbells, and after using them for upper body stuff (overhead press, curls, laterals, etc.) one of my wrists always hurts. It's not constant, but a sharp pain when I twist it, or put any weight on my hand (e.g. when leaning on a table or driving).

This is frustrating, as my arms feel like they barely need a rest day, but my wrist takes 2 or 3 days to stop hurting.

I'm inclined to just push through the pain and ignore it (and that's what I've been doing), but I have a feeling that I'm asking for an injury, and then it would be permanent.

Anyone have experience of this, know what it is, why it's happening or how to fix it?

(The obvious solution would be to use lighter weights, but I can't really do that - they're already pretty pathetic, and I think I'm already getting too many reps out of them).

Thanks in advance, if you have any ideas.

Tsarnaev questioned for 16 hours before he was read rights

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (FBI handout)Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, suspected of bombing the Boston Marathon with his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was questioned for 16 hours by authorities before being read his Miranda rights, the AP reports today.

Tsarnaev, a 19-year-old college student, confessed his role in the crime during the questioning in his hospital room, but that confession may not be admissible in court. Once he was advised of his right to seek counsel and remain silent by a representative from the U.S. attorney's office, the suspect stopped talking.

Police are allowed to question suspects without first Mirandizing them, but then their statements are not admissible in court. If police ask questions that seek to uncover future threats to the public, something called the "public safety exception" provides a loophole to this rule.

So in Tsarnaev's case, if they had asked him if he knew of any planned attacks, or whether there were any bombs planted around Boston, his answers would theoretically be OK to use in a case against him. Authorities questioned both the Christmas Day "underwear bomber" Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab?for 50 minutes?and the attempted Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad without first reading them their Miranda rights using the public safety exception.

Some Republicans, led by Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have argued that Tsarnaev should be treated as an enemy combatant and detained indefinitely so he can be questioned without a lawyer. Since Tsarnaev is a U.S. citizen arrested on U.S. soil?and because authorities have not connected him to a larger terror network?holding him as an enemy combatant most likely would be illegal.

Even if Tsarnaev's reported confession is not allowed to be used in the courtroom, authorities told the AP that the Tsarnaevs told a witness?a man whose car they carjacked?that they were responsible for the bombing. Law enforcement has also uncovered physical evidence from the scene that they think ties the Tsarnaevs to the bombings.

Health insurer WellPoint's 1Q profit rises 3 pct

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? WellPoint shares hit their highest level since the summer of 2011 on Wednesday after the nation's second largest health insurer trumped first-quarter earnings expectations, raised its 2013 forecast and said it could profit immediately from a key health care overhaul coverage expansion next year.

The Indianapolis company's performance to start 2013 followed a year marked by slumping earnings, a forecast cut and the abrupt departure of former CEO Angela Braly. Analysts say the net income and higher forecast WellPoint reported Wednesday helped improve investor sentiment.

"We believe this turnaround story is making progress," BMO Capital Markets analyst Jennifer Lynch said in a research note.

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Thomas Carroll added that investors came into the quarter with relatively low expectations for the Blue Cross Blue Shield insurer, and left happy to see some upside in the stock.

WellPoint Inc.'s first-quarter earnings rose about 3 percent to $885.2 million, or $2.89 per share. That compares to $856.5 million, or $2.53 per share, a year ago. Adjusted earnings totaled $2.94 per share, not counting investment gains.

That easily topped the average analyst forecast of $2.38 per share, according to FactSet.

Operating revenue, which also excludes investment results, jumped nearly 16 percent to $17.55 billion. Analysts expected higher revenue of $17.86 billion.

WellPoint said its acquisition last year of Medicaid coverage provider Amerigroup Corp. helped revenue spike and added more than 2 million members to its enrollment in the first quarter. That helped raise the insurer's total membership to 35.8 million people, a total that trails only UnitedHealth Group Inc.

Medicaid is the state-federal program that provides health coverage for the needy and disabled people, and it represents a growth opportunity for health insurers. States are starting to move residents who qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare, which is a federally-funded program for people over age 65 and the disabled, into managed care programs that improve care and cut wasteful spending.

WellPoint officials have said the opportunity these "dual eligible" patients offer was a driving force behind the deal. Medicaid enrollment also will grow next year in several states when the program expands as part of the health care overhaul's push to cover millions of uninsured people.

WellPoint Chief Financial Officer Wayne DeVeydt said Wednesday the insurer's new Medicaid patients from the overhaul expansion could become profitable immediately. He said the Amerigroup acquisition means the insurer is already set up in several states where coverage will expand.

These contracts usually take a year to break even and become profitable, said Ana Gupte, an analyst for the investment research firm Dowling & Partners.

States hire insurers to administer their Medicaid coverage, and the companies face high expenses initially as they set up doctor networks and learn what sort of programs their new patient population needs. For instance, a population with a high concentration of diabetes patients may need support programs to help people manage their disease.

While instant profitability from the Medicaid expansion represents a positive, WellPoint still faces plenty of uncertainty over how the overhaul will affect it next year, Wells Fargo analyst Peter Costa said.

WellPoint has a relatively large percentage of its enrollment in individual insurance or coverage through small businesses. The overhaul calls for exchanges to start next year on which people in those markets will be able to buy coverage, many with help from income-based tax credits. Investors aren't sure how much business insurers like WellPoint will lose or gain because of these exchanges, and analysts say that has made them wary of buying the stock.

That wasn't the case at least on Wednesday, when the stock climbed 5.8 percent, or $4 to close at $73.33 after touching a high price of $74.43 earlier in the session. FactSet says that is its highest price since July 2011. The stock is up nearly 20 percent so far this year.

Angela Braly, the former CEO, left last August as investor frustration started to surface over the company's performance. WellPoint has since beaten analyst expectations for three straight quarters, and new CEO Joseph Swedish started last month.

On Wednesday, WellPoint said it now expects 2013 earnings to total $7.80 per share, up from its forecast in January for $7.60 per share. Analysts expect, on average, earnings of $7.82 per share.

While driving, texting by voice no safer than by hands: Study

A new study says voice texting is just as dangerous as using your hands (AP)Going hands-free on your mobile device to send a text while driving is no less dangerous than the traditional method, according to a new university study.

In fact, the risk is nearly identical, with both ways cutting reaction time for drivers in half.

Christine Yager, who led the study for the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, said the research was "a useful step, and we?re eager to see what other studies may find."

It was conducted as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

A number of unsettling statistics have come out recently as part of the ongoing effort to help reduce behavior called ?distracted driving.?

In March, a study found that adults are far more likely to text while driving than teens. Another study released in early April found that daydreaming while driving results in thousands of fatal car accidents each year.

For its study, TTI tested 47 drivers on a closed course to measure their reaction times while using the two most popular voice-controlled texting apps, Siri and Vlingo.

The drivers went around the course three times: once while not using their phone; once texting with their hands; and once texting by voice. A stoplight appeared at random intervals, and the researchers compared how long it took the drivers to respond.

?Driver response times were significantly delayed no matter which texting method was used. In each case, drivers took about twice as long to react as they did when they weren?t texting,? an excerpt from the study reads.

The study had some other interesting findings. Drivers reported, for instance, that they felt safer when texting by voice compared with their hands. And it found that the latter was slightly faster than texting by voice, along with posing the same general amount of risk.

The study did not specify why texting by voice posed the same risk. But several factors could explain the results, including the fact that an individual must still look at the phone to read and send his or her text message, even if using a "hands-free" device.

UKIP claims Thatcher mantle, has vote hope

By Andrew Osborn

LONDON (Reuters) - The leader of Britain's anti-European Union UK Independence Party said on Tuesday his movement was carrying the torch for the late Margaret Thatcher's views on Europe, saying he planned to cause a "political earthquake".

In his most detailed comments to date on his party's electoral strategy, UKIP leader Nigel Farage said he hoped to build on surging poll ratings to make big gains in local elections on May 2, win European Parliament elections next year, and secure a "substantial number" of parliamentary seats in Britain in 2015.

The party holds no seats in the British parliament, but is represented in the European Parliament.

"There's a huge vacuum on the centre-right of British politics today and I think UKIP could be ... the catalysts over the course of the next few years for a really fundamental realignment of the way politics is structured in Britain," Farage told parliament reporters.

"I am leading a movement that is becoming a very successful modern different movement in British politics. My job is to change the entire nature of the national debate," he added, saying he hoped to alter the way the country was governed.

Once dismissed by Prime Minister David Cameron as "a party of fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists", UKIP has seen its poll ratings surge to 17 percent after tapping into growing public disenchantment with the EU and unease over immigration levels.

Farage wants Britain to leave the EU and to halt what he calls "open-door immigration". Although UKIP has 12 lawmakers in the 754-member European Parliament, it does not yet have any MPs in the British parliament.

Farage's views on Europe and immigration have caused problems for Cameron, the leader of the ruling Conservative party. Some of Cameron's own members of parliament feel he has become too liberal and should be pushing the same policies.

For many of them, Thatcher, who died on April 8 and was Britain's longest-serving prime minister of the 20th century, remains an idol. Farage told them he had inherited Thatcher's ideological legacy.

"I cannot believe that a young Margaret Thatcher leaving Oxford (University) today would join the Conservative Party. I think she'd come and get involved with UKIP," he said.

"On Europe yes we are the true inheritors of Thatcher."

Farage, who dined with media mogul Rupert Murdoch earlier this year, on Tuesday echoed Murdoch's views on press regulation and on the identity of a possible successor to Cameron - Michael Gove, the minister for education.

He pointed to Canada's Reform Party as a model for success, saying critics who said UKIP would never enjoy electoral success in Britain should look at what the Canadian protest party had achieved.

"We're not there yet by a long chalk but don't think it can't happen under a first-past-the-post system because in Canada it did," he said.

"The Reform Party was subjected to the same degree of mockery and derision, but they became the biggest party in the Canadian parliament in the 1990s. They then staged a masterful reverse takeover of what was left of the conservative party."

Time for Apple to Answer Its Wake-Up Call ... - Yahoo! Finance

When earnings expectations are as low as they are for Apple (AAPL), results don't get "released" as much as they escape captivity. Even if Apple sandbagged its guidance in order to make the actual numbers look good, the company is almost certain to report shrinking year-over-year profits for the first time in more than a decade.

According to Yahoo! Finance, Apple is expected to report earnings of $10.07 per share on $42.6 billion in revenues. In the same quarter last year Apple earned $12.30 a share. Negative earnings growth means Apple's much cited P/E of 9 isn't all that it would seem.

Hank Smith, CIO and VP of Haverford, is long Apple and says investors can win big tonight with just a little help from CEO Tim Cook. Smith says Cook can send shares higher one of two ways.

First, the company can come up with a more creative capital allocation strategy in the form of buybacks or a dividend hike. Smith reasons that Apple is better off buying shares with the stock at $400 than when it was $300 higher. Unfortunately Apple already started a $10 billion buyback program last October with the stock in the mid-$600 area. Suffice it to say, the program did little to support the shares.

Smith would much prefer a boost in the payout to shareholders. "Dividends are very real and the most tangible statement a company can make about the confidence in their current condition and future prospects," he states.

What would really get the Street's blood pumping would be some sort of new product. The iPad, iPhone and iPad all changed the world, but that was a long time ago. By tradition Apple releases products only during "events" that occur whenever the company pleases. This caginess has only fed the bear case and the growls are getting louder.

"It's one thing being coy and non-communicative when your stock price is rising every single month and every single quarter," notes Smith, "but when you drop from $700 a share to under $400 in a mere 4 or 5 months, I think that's a wake up call."

The stage is set for Apple to come up with an organic upside surprise tonight and it doesn't even involve selling more product. All the company has to do is come up with some sort of release date on almost anything new whether it be distributing cash to shareholders or proving it can innovate without Steve Jobs.

Tim Cook has gotten his wake-up call. Tonight Wall Street gets to see if he's asleep at the switch or out to lunch.

Eating Niagara: Cooking up collaboration between old and new ...

I love Food & Drink magazine. Every time I see an issue, I want to lick its colourful, glossy pages. If it wasn't so gauche, I'm certain it would prove that you can actually taste whatever dish or drink is printed on them.

I don't often get a copy in my clutches because my fellow drinkers who frequent the same neighbourhood libation station known as the LCBO seem as ravenous as me when they see the magazine hot off the press and temptingly on display at the store's entrance.

The copies I do have, I squirrel away in a special place ? my cookbook cupboard. They are dog-eared, buckled and stained from ingredients I drop on them while concocting the recipes on their pages.

Given that history, I couldn't wait to sit in on Lucy Waverman's session at the recent Food Bloggers of Canada conference in Hockley Valley. Lucy is the magazine's food editor. She's also food writer royalty in my world, writing a regular column for the Globe and Mail. I unabashedly covet her job and I planned to hang on to her every word as she talked about the new face of food writing.

I gathered, though, from what she had to say, that it's a face she doesn't love.

Certain messages from her talk still echo more than a week later: food bloggers are said to have taken the joy out of cooking because we don't test our recipes; don't expect to make a mint from a cookbook or even think that publishing one will be easy; and the one that really haunts me ? most people in the industry feel that food bloggers are pushovers. We'll write about anything for a freebie.

I blog about food but I'm not a pushover. I will not shill for a free bag of pasta, nor have I despite the offers being plentiful.

It's obvious to me that in some cases I'm not being chosen to receive free product because a company loves my blog or my ability to craft a sentence. They love me because I'm good for their marketing bottom line (read: cheap labour).

Still, I wasn't angry at Lucy's bluntness. In fact, I appreciated when she asked if anyone in the room had worked with an editor or been through the rigorous fact-checking process. I was one of three people who raised my hand.

I liked how forthright she was when she told us to ask permission to use someone's recipes on our site and to test vigourously when creating our own.

When she reinforced the need for bloggers to be authentic and ethical, I cried out hallelujah in my head. I was unfazed by her honesty and her lack of warmth and fuzziness when doling out the truth. We've all read bad blogs, be it about food or anything else, and as someone who strives to bring the same values I learned as a journalist to my hobby, I was grateful for her candor.

Others weren't, however.

Maybe it's because I've spent a decade in newsrooms, the same environment Lucy has spent her career, and know they are places where punches aren't pulled. Thick skins are required or grown in a hurry, and being mindful of the feelings of others isn't always top of mind when filling pages and meeting deadlines.

But many who joined me in the session were offended by Lucy's assessment of food blogging. They thought?she was a downright downer while the rest of the conference had such a positive tone.

It was obvious she was leery ? and weary ? of food bloggers, particularly after relaying a bad experience she had working with one on a story for Food & Drink.

How unfortunate, really. Those of us who were at the conference were there because we want to see food bloggers upholding the same standards Lucy uses in her own work.

We all know there are pushovers, those who will sellout for a jar of salsa or free tickets to the food event du jour, just like Lucy says.?But I'm confident that I wasn't sitting in a room of those people.

One conference goer even suggested traditional media and bloggers could work together. He has seen it happen in his hometown of Calgary. But Lucy made it seem as though it were impossible in Toronto. Too many pushovers and hacks, perhaps, using new media as their outlet, and people had caught on to the problems with food bloggers.

To that I say, Lucy, give us a chance. It's not you versus us. We can only be better if we collaborate, a message reinforced recently when I sat in on a talk by legendary television producer Ralph Mellanby, who spoke to a group of up-and-comers lusting after his job.

Mellanby, who won five Emmys for his television production of several Olympics, didn't tell his proteges he doubted they had what it takes to make it in the industry. He urged everyone to work together because the person they were sitting next to could one day be their boss or can teach us a thing or two.

?That person sitting next to you is as big as any producer walking in. You need to work together, not stab each other in the back," Mellanby said. "When you see great shows? that?s not a big producer. That?s the cameraman? the whole crew.?

To my fellow bloggers, I say find someone in the world of traditional media and reach out to them. Ask them for feedback about your work, interview them about how they do their job, deal with unexpected hurdles or come up with story ideas. Find a willing mentor because the Lucy Wavermans of the world have so much to offer us. And don't dismiss them because you don't like what they have to say.

We need to work together, We all have much to learn from each other. To do so will only make the industry of food writing better, more authentic and ethical, just like Lucy Waverman ? and us food bloggers ? want it.

Parents of Boston suspect describe his Russia trip

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? The parents of Tamerlan Tsarnaev insisted Sunday that he came to Dagestan and Chechnya last year to visit relatives and had nothing to do with the militants operating in the volatile part of Russia, with his father saying he slept a lot of the time. But the Boston bombing suspect couldn't have been immune to the attacks that savaged the region during his six-month stay.

Investigators are now focusing on the trip that Tsarnaev made to Russia in January 2012 that has raised many questions. His father said his son stayed with him in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, where the family lived briefly before moving to the U.S. a decade ago. The father had only recently returned.

"He was here, with me in Makhachkala," Anzor Tsarnaev told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "He slept until 3 p.m., and you know, I would ask him: 'Have you come here to sleep?' He used to go visiting, here and there. He would go to eat somewhere. Then he would come back and go to bed."

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and his 19-year-old brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ? both ethnic Chechens ? are accused of setting off the two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15 that killed three people and wounded more than 180 others. Three days later, Tamerlan died in a shootout with police, while his brother was later captured alive but wounded.

No evidence has emerged since to link Tamerlan Tsarnaev to militant groups in Russia's Caucasus. On Sunday, the Caucasus Emirate, which Russia and the U.S. consider a terrorist organization, denied involvement in the Boston attack.

A woman who works in a small shop opposite Tsarnaev's apartment building said she only saw his son during the course of one month last summer. She described him as a dandy.

"He dressed in a very refined way," Madina Abdullaeva said. "His boots were the same color as his clothes. They were summer boots, light, with little holes punched in the leather."

Anzor Tsarnaev said they also traveled to neighboring Chechnya.

"He went with me twice, to see my uncles and aunts. I have lots of them," the father said.

He said they also visited one of his daughters, who lives in the Chechen town of Urus-Martan with her husband. His son-in-law's brothers all work in the police force under Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, he said.

Moscow has given Kadyrov a free hand to stabilize Chechnya following two wars between federal troops and Chechen separatists beginning in 1994, and his feared police and security forces have been accused of rampant rights abuses.

What began in Chechnya as a fight for independence has morphed into an Islamic insurgency that has spread throughout Russia's Caucasus, with the worst of the violence now in Dagestan.

In February, 2012, shortly after Tamerlan Tsarnaev's arrival in Dagestan, a four-day operation to wipe out several militant bands in Chechnya and Dagestan left 17 police and at least 20 militants dead. In May, two car bombs shook Makhachkala, killing at least 13 people and wounding about 130 more. Other bombings and shootings targeting police and other officials took place nearly daily.

The Caucasus Emirate said Sunday that its mujahedin are not fighting with the U.S.

"We are at war with Russia, which is not only responsible for the occupation of the Caucasus, but also for heinous crimes against Muslims," it said in a statement on the Kavkaz Center website.

The group suggested that Russia's secret services would have had a greater interest in carrying out the attack in Boston.

Despite the violence in Dagestan, Anzor Tsarnaev said Sunday that his son did not want to leave and had thoughts on how he could go into business. But the father said he encouraged him to go back to the U.S. and try to get citizenship. Tamerlan Tsarnaev returned to the U.S. in July.

His mother said that he was questioned upon arrival at New York's airport.

"And he told me on the phone, 'Imagine, mama, they were asking me such interesting questions as if I were some strange and scary man: Where did you go? What did you do there?'" Zubeidat Tsarnaeva recalled her son telling her at the time.

When the two ethnic Chechen suspects were identified, the FBI said it reviewed its records and found that in early 2011, a foreign government ? which law enforcement officials confirmed was Russia ? had asked for information about Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The FBI said it was told that Tsarnaev was a "follower of radical Islam" and was preparing to travel to this foreign country to join unspecified underground groups.

The FBI said that it responded by interviewing Tsarnaev and family members, but found no terrorism activity.

Both parents insist that the FBI continued to monitor Tamerlan Tsarnaev and that both of their sons were set up.

Their mother went so far on Sunday to claim that the FBI had contacted her elder son after the deadly bombs exploded at the marathon. If true it would be the first indication that the FBI considered him a suspect before Boston descended into violence on Thursday.

At FBI headquarters in Washington, spokesman Michael Kortan stood by the bureau's public statement of Friday in which the bureau described a 2011 FBI interview of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Kortan said the 2011 interview was the only FBI contact with Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The FBI statement said that the FBI did not learn of the identity of Tamerlan and his brother until Friday after the gun battle in which Tamerlan was killed.

The mother's claim could not be independently confirmed, and she has made statements in the past that appeared to show a lack of full understanding of what occurred in Boston.

Investigators released photos and video of the two Tsarnaev brothers on Thursday afternoon, but at that point their identities were not known. By late that night Tamerlan Tsarnaev was dead.

Tsarnaeva said her elder son told her by telephone that the FBI had called to inform him that they considered him a suspect and he should come in for questioning.

She said her son refused. "I told them, what do you suspect me of?" Tsarnaeva quoted her son as saying. "This is your problem and if you need me you should come to where I am."

He then told her he was going to drive his younger brother to the university, she said, speaking by telephone from Chechnya. Tsarnaeva claimed that her son later called his wife to tell her they were being chased and fired upon.

National Secular Society - Secular doctors call on the GMC to revise ...

Secular doctors have called on the GMC to urgently revise guidance on personal belief and medical practice, effective from 22 April 2013, that allows religious doctors "to opt out of providing a particular procedure because of (the doctor's) beliefs and values?"

Dr Lempert, a GP and chair of the Secular Medical Forum (SMF), warned that the new guidance gives a green light to religious doctors to obstruct patient care. He said: "The new guidance gives unrestrained freedom to religious doctors to refuse to provide the most appropriate treatment options".

"The guidance also contradicts existing BMA policy that the right of doctors to refuse to treat patients for reasons of conscientious objection should be restricted "to those protected in law and to withdrawing life-sustaining treatment?"

"Patients should be able to rely on their doctor's professional expertise not being compromised by his/her religious beliefs. It is not in patients' best interests to allow wholesale religious exemptions to the provision of standard medical care"

"The new guidance fails to limit conscientious objection to the areas, such as abortion, that are narrowly defined by legislation, making way for a potentially open-ended refusal to provide medical care on religious grounds. As a result, patients will be left vulnerable to the personal whims of their doctor."

The Secular Medical Forum criticised the new guidance which also recommends that doctors "must do (their) best to make sure that patients are aware of (their) objection in advance." The SMF is concerned that this places an unreasonable onus of responsibility on patients to investigate in advance their doctor's personal views.

Dr Lempert commented: "The GMC should remind doctors of the professional responsibilities which accompany the privilege of their chosen profession. Patients cannot always choose to see a doctor of their choice; so the guidelines should make clear that patients' best interests and reasonable treatment options should never be restricted because of conflict with the doctor's own personal beliefs, except where prescribed by law."

Pinot's Palette A Leader In Growth And Franchisee Satisfaction

Fastest-Growing Paint and Sip Franchise Earns Top Industry Recognitions

HOUSTON - April 17, 2013 // PRNewswire // - Pinot's Palette, a national Paint and Sip franchise known for providing guests with an entertaining evening of art and wine, has kicked off 2013 by earning several commendations for its continued growth and success.

In March 2013, Pinot's Palette became the only Paint and Sip franchise included on Entrepreneur Magazine's Top New Franchises list. All companies included on the list were ranked according to financial strength, growth rate, and size, as well as other factors such as startup costs and percentage of terminations.

Company President Charles Willis notes that this is not the first time the company has been recognized by Entrepreneur Magazine.

"In January of this year, Pinot's Palette became the only Paint and Sip to receive an honorable mention on Entrepreneur's Franchise 500 list," Willis says. "It's very exciting to receive so much recognition from such an influential publication."

In addition to earning accolades from Entrepreneur Magazine, Pinot's Palette also won Franchise Business Review's Franchisee Satisfaction Award. The award, which was given out in February 2013, ranks companies solely on franchisee feedback. Pinot's Palette was ranked 11th on Franchise Business Review's list of Top 50 Franchises: Under 50 Locations.

Company CEO Craig Ceccanti says franchisee support is a key part of the Pinot's Palette business model.

"We have developed a wide variety of resources to help our franchisees every step of the way," Ceccanti says. "In fact, many of our franchisees tell us that they chose Pinot's Palette over other Paint and Sip franchises because we are the only one to offer such extensive training and support."

In addition to offering an intensive, week-long training "boot camp", the Pinot's Palette team helps new franchisees scout studio locations, negotiate leases, and build custom marketing plans based on local strategies. Additionally, all Pinot's Palette franchisees have access to the Pinot Technology Suite (PTS), a proprietary software system that streamlines all aspects of studio management.

"Our system makes it easier for franchisees to maintain an optimal work-life balance," Ceccanti says. "The PTS system helps them maximize sales, from point-of-sale transactions and reservation management to each location's website page."

Pinot's Palette offers both single and multi-unit development opportunities around the country. For more information, contact the company's headquarters office at Franchise@PinotsPalette.com or visit http://www.pinotspalette.com/Franchise.

Milk thistle extract aids the fight against skin cancer

    16 April, 2013

    By Staff Writer
    NYR Natural News

Natural Heath News?? Two recent studies have shown that the milk thistle extract, silibinin, kills skin cells mutated by UVA radiation and protects against damage by UVB radiation, thus providing two kinds of benefit against UV-induced skin cancer and photoageing.

?When you have a cell affected by UV radiation, you either want to repair it or kill it so that it cannot go on to cause cancer. We show that silibinin does both,? says Rajesh Agarwal, PhD, lead author of both studies and programme leader of Cancer Prevention and Control at the CU Cancer Center and professor at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

    Deadly to cancer cells

The first study, published in the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology worked with human skin cells subjected to UVA radiation, which makes up about 95% of the sun?s radiation that reaches Earth.

Agarwal and colleagues treated these UVA-affected cells with silibinin. With silibinin, the rate at which these damaged cells died increased dramatically.

?When you take human skin cells?? keratinocytes?? and treat them with silibinin, nothing happens. It?s not toxic. But when you damage these cells with UVA radiation, treatment with silibinin kills the cells,? Agarwal says, thus removing the mutated cells that can cause skin cancer and photoageing.

Specifically, the study shows that pretreatment with silibinin resulted in higher release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the UVA-exposed cells, leading to higher rates of cell death.

    But protective to skin cells

The second study, published this month by the same authors in the journal Molecular Carcinogenesis shows a different benefit. Instead of beneficially killing cells damaged by UVA radiation, treatment with silibinin protects human skill cells from damage by UVB radiation, which makes up about 5% of the sun?s radiation reaching Earth.

In this case that protection comes from increasing cells? expression of the protein interleukin-12, which works to quickly repair damaged cells.

?It has been 20 years of work with this compound, silibinin,? Agarwal says. ?We first noticed its effectiveness in treating both skin and solid cancers, and we now have a much more complete picture of the mechanisms that allow this compound to work.?

The findings add to a body of research that could lead to, amongst other things, more effective sunscreening and skincare products as well as important cancer treatments.

PFT: Browns owner says he'll cooperate with FBI

The agent for California wide receiver Keenan Allen told PFT Tuesday he has not been informed of any problems regarding the drug test his client took at the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

JT Johnson, Allen?s agent, said he has not been notified regarding his client?s test results.

?We have received no notifications. None,? Johnson told PFT Tuesday afternoon.

According to a published report from ESPN?s Adam Schefter on Tuesday,?drug-testing findings?from the Combine relating to Allen were ?red-flagged.??According to Schefter, who cited an unnamed source, Allen?s test had a high water content. Moreover,?the results of the February Combine test caused Allen to be required to take another test, the results of which are unknown, according to Schefter.

Johnson told PFT Tuesday afternoon that Allen?s Combine drug test is the lone one he has taken and that the former Golden Bears receiver was not re-tested for drugs at the Combine medical re-check for teams in Indianapolis on April 5-6.?According to Johnson, the April Combine visit was related to was Allen?s right ankle and left knee.

Jeff Foster, the president of National Football Scouting, Inc., which coordinates the Combine, confirmed that no drug testing occurred at the medical re-check.

On Tuesday, Johnson told PFT that a reporter asked him last week if Allen had taken another drug test at the April medical examination in Indianapolis. In response, Johnson checked with the NFL, the NFLPA and the Combine about the issue and did not receive any indication of a problem related to the February Combine test, the agent said.

Johnson also checked with Allen, who told Johnson that if he had been notified about a testing issue, he would have told his agent.

Per the NFL?s substance-abuse policy on the league?s media website, a player who has a confirmed positive test is notified by league medical personnel. There is nothing about notifying a player?s representation, however.

Allen?is regarded as one of the better receivers available in the Class of 2013, but he has faced some challenges in the pre-draft process, with the health of his left knee an issue. Allen performed some drills for scouts in April but was timed at just?4.71 and 4.75 seconds?in the 40-yard dash, according to NFL Network?s Mike Mayock.

Johnson told PFT that the left knee ligament Allen injured last year is ?100 percent.? Strengthening the muscles in the leg around the knee is a primary focus now, Johnson said. Allen?s right ankle has also checked out well, Johnson said.

Johnson and Allen have communicated multiple times on Tuesday, the agent said. ?I?m ready to play football,? Johnson said his client told him.
