5 Tips for Making Long Distance Relationships Work

Living apart from your partner can be one of the most trying times in a person?s life. While distance can make the heart grow fonder, it can also produce a host of other issues that threaten even the strongest relationships. Even if you talk on the phone or via a web cam each day, being unable to physically see one another each day can begin to take a toll on any relationship. Here you?ll find five tips that can help you and your partner make it through those rough times and keep your long-distance relationship on the right track.

Tip #1: Communicate regularly. Whether it?s via phone, Facetime, IM, or email be sure to communicate on a regular basis. It can be more important to be in daily contact with your partner when you go long periods without seeing them face to face than it is when you see each other regularly. Even if you are in very different time zones try to email or chat once a day, even if it?s only briefly.

Tip #2: Put time and thought into romantic gestures. Living far apart gives you more opportunities to engage in old school romance than you do when you live near one another. For example, write a love letter, mail a personal gift or care package, or send personal photos or videos to one another.

This will show your partner that you are thinking about them even when you aren?t talking to them and can keep things interesting.

Tip #3: Agree upon a visit schedule. Whether you and your partner have been together for a while and are just beginning a long-distance relationship or if you have always been that way, laying out a fair and even plan for visiting each other is important. Having a plan ahead of time can alleviate possible fights down the road or one person feeling they are doing more travel than the other.

Tip #4: Expect some hiccups. We all know how busy life can get. We work all day and have other projects and by the time the day is over we are completely worn out or simply need a little ?me? time. Allow your partner to have these kinds of moments without getting upset with them that they aren?t paying attention to you. Also, plan on missing schedule phone calls or having travel plans delayed ? these things will happen and if you let the occasional lapse roll off your shoulder you?ll be in a much happier place.

Tip #5: Believe that it can work. This may be the most important tip for those in long-distance relationships. Many believe that long-distance relationships are doomed and your support system may tell you the same thing. If you firmly believe you can make it work then you?ll do that much more to make it so without getting overly frustrated or giving up easily.

By following a few of these tips you?ll find that you long-distance relationship is more manageable than you first thought and can help you and your partner get through any rough patches in your relationship while you are living apart.
